This piece is scored for strings with two cello parts. It may either be played as a string-orchestra item or as a chamber item for string quintet. When played with string orchestra the ideal state of affairs is the presence of double bass(es), enough cellos to allow both cello parts to balance the higher parts well, and a satisfactory viola section. The double bass part, however, may be left out and the violin 3 part (inevitably a bit of a makeshift but perfectly acceptable) may either double or even replace the viola. For chamber use, with one player to a part, violin 3 could replace viola and the double bass part might even be added to good effect if played with tact.
Orchestration: Violin 1, violin 2, Viola or violin 3 or cello, cello, double bass or cello.
