The Great Gate of Kiev from Pictures at an Exhibition. The parts are cued so that this arrangement can be played by strings only or strings and piano with any available wind and percussion. If there are comparatively few lower strings the piano part will be useful in strengthening these. It may also provide a contrasting colour when the orchestra consists mainly of strings. When two oboe players are present the oboe part may well be split so that the principal player performs the more exposed passages.
