Grade: Intermediate
Czech bassist Adolf Lotter (1871-1942) was one of the leading bassists of his generation and lived in London for over 50 years. He was Principal Bass of the Queen's Hall Orchestra for many years, also playing with many London orchestras, alongside his work as a composer and editor for the music publisher Hawkes - before the merger with Boosey.
Lotter composed a wide range of salon and light music pieces but few for double bass apart from The Ragtime Bass Player, Darby & Joan (Vln/Db/Pno) and an effective and accessible transcription of a Pleyel Trio for viola, cello and double bass.
The Ragtime Bass Player was first published in 1913, at the height of the ragtime craze, and is a lively and rhythmic solo for the intermediate player. A supportive piano accompaniment adds to the enjoyment and this has been very popular since it was first published by Recital Music. The double bass part remains in the orchestral register and there are enough syncopations to keep the music moving swiftly along. Ideal for the intermediate bassist who is confident in the lower register of the double bass.
